A continuum model was presented for the evolution of the total dislocation density in the framework of rate-independent plasticity. Three basic physical features were taken into account: the role of dislocation densities in hardening, the relationships between slip velocity and mobility of gliding dislocations and the energetics of self- and mutual interactions between dislocations. Attention was restricted to plastic processes corresponding to single slip.
