It was recalled that the classical theory of grain boundaries was based upon Bollmann’s O-lattice analysis. Special significance was accorded to atomic sites, in the lattice of grain
2, which would also be lattice sites in grain 1 if that grain was extended into the domain of grain 2. Little attention was paid to the orientation of the grain boundary with respect to the lattices of the two grains. It had been shown that, in some systems, the preferred interface between 2 phases was governed by the requirement that lattice planes in the 2 phases should meet along a line lying in the interface. This was a different problem to that of determining preferred orientations of the boundaries between 2 grains of the same phase. By using the simple model of a square 2-dimensional lattice, and an appropriate mathematical algorithm, an atomistic analysis of this latter problem was attemped.
