The basic mechanisms of grain-boundary faceting under equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions were examined. Flat incommensurate boundaries were not always stable toward faceting. A rate model was proposed for the relaxation of such boundaries leading to the formation of a one-dimensional faceted structure.
