Stacking fault energy γ and density of states at the Fermi level were measured in Cr-Mn-N and Cr-Ni-Mn-N austenitic steels using transmission electron microscopy and conduction electron spin resonance. An inverse proportionality between γ and the Fermi level was found in Cr-Mn-N, whereas a direct proportionality occurred in Cr-Mn-Ni-N steels. A comparison with the available data on pure metals was presented.
