The relationship between defect velocity and driving force was considered. Monte Carlo simulations were made of linear defects in 2 dimensions. The force versus velocity relationship was found to be non-linear, and this was contrary to the usual models. A new analytical model for the force-velocity relationship was derived which included the effect of kinks upon multiple levels, the non-simultaneity of kink formation, the disappearance of kinks and the non-linearity kink formation relationship. The resultant force-velocity relationship was relatively simple but non-linear. The model was shown to give excellent agreement with simulation results over wide ranges of driving force and temperature. It could be easily extended to a wide range of defects in 2 or 3 dimensions.
