An investigation was made of how small-scale metric fluctuations on a 2D interface influenced large-scale lateral diffusion. It was found that the effect of these fluctuations could be cumulative and grew exponentially with time. An estimation was also made of the typical time after which the predictions of a model that ignored the small-scale fluctuations substantially differed from the predictions of a more realistic model, which took the fluctuations into account.
