A study was made of dislocation nucleation, the corresponding work hardening and the influence of resistance to dislocation motion within the framework of the continuum theory of dislocations. An anti-plane constrained shear problem was considered which admitted an analytical solution. The interesting features of this solution were the energy and dissipation thresholds for dislocation nucleation, the Bauschinger translational work hardening, and the size effect.
