The effect of ultrasonic treatments upon the mobility of short surface dislocations in crystals was investigated. It was found that the ultrasonic treatment changed the velocity of dislocations under a permanent mechanical load. The nature of the variation in dislocation velocity was governed by the sign of the external stresses which acted upon the sample. That is, compressive forces decreased the velocity while tensile forces increased it. After ultrasonic treatment, a decrease in the activation energy for dislocation motion and an enhancement of the electroplastic effect were observed.
