Debye-like screening by edge dislocations of some externally given stress was studied by means of a variational approach to coarse-grained field theory. Explicitly given were the force field and the induced geometrically necessary dislocation distribution, in the special case of a single glide axis in 2 dimensions, for (i) a single edge dislocation and (ii) a dislocation wall. Numerical simulation showed that the correlation in relaxed dislocation configurations was in good agreement with the geometrically necessary dislocations induced in case (i). The results for (ii) predicted well the experimentally observed decay-length for geometrically necessary dislocations that developed close to grain boundaries.
