A non-contact atomic force microscopic investigation was made of differences, in atomic-resolution images, between the (100)-(2 x 1) reconstructed surface, with a dangling bond, and the (100)(2 x 1) monohydride surface, without a dangling bond. On the former surface, the distance between bright spots was 0.32nm. This was larger than that between Si atoms. On the H-doped surface, the distance between bright spots was 0.35nm. This was in good agreement with the distance between H atoms. Individual H atoms were resolved here for the first time.
