The controversies involved in obtaining a coarse-grained description of dislocation energetics and dynamics were considered. A start was made by outlining the structural and dynamical considerations, specific to dislocations, which were associated with homogenization. Particular attention was paid to the role of dislocation sub-structures. These were critical to determining the mechanical response in a coarse-grained representation.
