The effects of pulsed laser irradiation upon the Hg concentration were investigated. A model was developed, for the laser-induced diffusion of Hg, which took account of heat-flow transients and of the melting and solidification of the surface under pulsed laser irradiation. It permitted an analysis to be made of the role which was played by irradiation and diffusion parameters in determining Hg behavior. A comparison of the calculated compositional depth profiles of Hg with published experimental data permitted the estimation of the values of diffusion, out-diffusion, and segregation parameters; which were usually unknown under laser annealing conditions.
