An investigation was made of perovskite oxides having ordered A cations which, in turn, localized the O vacancies into layers. The O-exchange kinetics of polycrystalline samples of the O-deficient double perovskite PrBaCo2O5+x were determined from electrical conductivity relaxation and by O-isotope exchange and depth profiling data. The latter measurements revealed that PrBaCo2O5+x had a high electronic conductivity plus rapid O-ion diffusion and surface exchange kinetics. Both techniques demonstrated that the O kinetics in this type of structure were significantly faster than in the corresponding disordered perovskites.
