The effect of various dopant cations on the phase transformations of initially stabilized supersaturated tetragonal ZrO2 during various heat treatments was studied. The resultant fraction of monoclinic grains developed twinned structures, but there was a lack of information concerning the nature of the grain boundaries which formed in doped monoclinic solid solutions. The analysis of particular selected-area electron diffraction patterns provided an alternative method, to high-resolution electron microscopy or electron back-scattered diffraction, for characterizing twin junctions in doped zirconia systems. The classification of these special twins was based upon the coincidence lattice site concept.
