An approximate continuum method was described for the calculation of the interaction energy between cavities and strain fields in complex configurations. The method was then used to examine semi-quantitatively the effective forces between cavities and screw or edge dislocations. Account was taken of the effects of surface tension and of pressurized gas within the cavity. Not only local interactions involving individual cavities, but also the combined forces which acted on dislocations in the vicinity of multiple cavities and simultaneously within the range of external-surface image forces, were considered.
