It was pointed out that dislocations were analogous to elementary particles. Coincidences in the behavior of a dislocation, and such a particle, suggested that the former could be treated as a defect in a 4-dimensional structure. It was proposed that electromagnetic space was not a continuous space but was a discrete one that was composed of energy quanta which took the places of atoms in a crystalline structure.
