Numerical simulations of dislocation motion in a 2-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model revealed an unusual dynamic behavior in which it appeared that a so-called kink regime of dislocation gliding took place over a certain range of model parameters. This disagreed with current views concerning dislocation motion under plastic deformation. The kinks appeared to be similar to Sine-Gordon solitons, in spite of the discreteness of the lattice-damping and thermal fluctuations. At sufficiently high stresses and temperatures, the dislocation motion was accompanied by oscillations rather than kink nucleation.
