A review was presented of published interdiffusion data for various metal/metal multilayers, including Fe/Pt. Analysis of the data suggested that vacancy diffusion was the main interdiffusion mechanism in metallic multi-layers. An empirical relationship between the activation energy for interdiffusion in metallic multilayers, the average activation energy of vacancy diffusion and the activation energy (figure 2) for in-plane grain-boundary diffusion was proposed.
