Magnetic properties were compared with the total dislocation density in tensile- and fatigue-deformed commercial steels. It was found that the coercive field increased a little with ,fatigue cycles and appeared to become saturated in the middle and last stages of fatigue. The coefficient of magnetic susceptibility increased throughout all stages of the fatigue tests and was sensitive to degradation. The properties were influenced by the total dislocation density, and were independent of the deformation mode. The magnetic structure-sensitive properties were suggested to be useful for monitoring dislocation-structure changes.
