A new idea of using a stiffer metallic compound Mg2Si to enhance the damping capacities of Mg2Si/Mg–9Al was successfully attempted. Results showed that Mg2Si/Mg–9Al composite materials had better damping capacity than non-reinforced alloy. Damping capacities of composite materials were improved further after morphology modification of Mg2Si particles. Particular emphasis was placed on the increasing dislocation density around matrix–particulate interface and effect of modification of Sb on damping capacity.
