Permeation of H and D through Pd membrane was studied in real-time with elastic recoil detection analysis. The concentration depth profile of H on the low-pressure side of the membrane was followed by successive recording of elastic recoil detection spectra. The bulk concentration of H was high at low temperatures (below 380 and 420K for D and H, respectively) indicating that permeation was desorption limited. At higher temperatures, the concentration on the low-pressure side of the membrane diminished and H flux through the membrane increased The permeation of H therefore became diffusion limited.
