Experimental data on the temperature and orientational dependence of deformation behaviour, dislocation structure and fracture of single-crystal Ti3Al oriented for basal slip were reviewed. A dislocation model for the formation of microcracks of shear type in the basal-plane slip-band was described. Results were reported which were based upon an analysis of the structure of cores of a super-dislocations lying in the basal plane and on an estimation of the energies of decohesion and of unstable stacking faults; performed by computer simulation using N-particle potentials of interatomic interaction as applied to the description of plastic deformation. This permitted the explanation of the entire body of available experimental data.
