A detailed calculation was made of the elastic energy, of a straight dislocation in a cubic or hexagonal crystal, by using numerical methods. Results were presented for glide dislocations in Cu and Zn, for various orientations of the dislocation line and its Burgers vector. It was concluded that the slip planes of lowest elastic dislocation energy were the (¯1¯10) plane of Cu and the (00▪1) plane of Zn.
