A simple model which took account of the energy that was stored in the core region was used to analyze the nucleation of an incoherent phase on dislocations. It was shown that the formation mechanism of nuclei could change qualitatively, depending upon the relationship between parameters such as the difference in chemical energies of the phases, surface energy and elastic moduli. By solving the variational problem, a range of parameter magnitudes was found within which metastable nuclei could form. The results which were obtained qualitatively explained the observed behavior of a new phase in previously deformed alloys.
