After reviewing existing structural information concerning the adsorbate structures of S on Ni, Cu and Pt, C and N on Ni and Cu and O on Cu, the evidence for that idea (and for some complementary patterns of adsorbate-induced reconstruction) were considered. Data on long-range ordered phases on the (100), (111) and (110) faces of these materials were compared with the limited data then available on the influence of the adsorbates upon the anisotropy of the surface free energy.
