Using a lattice-gas model, it was shown that formation of the adsorbate-induced (1 x 2) missing-row structure on the (110) face of fcc metals due to anisotropic lateral interactions between metal atoms and adsorbed particles could result in a decrease in the apparent order of associative desorption from two to one. The latter seemed to take place in the H/Cu(110) and O/Ag(110) systems.
