Polarization-dependent surface-extended X-ray absorption fine-structure measurements of the c(6 x 2)O/Cu(110) system revealed the existence of two different adsorption sites: a long-bridge site along [001] Cu surface rows and a fourfold-coordinated site on (100) microfacets close to the second layer. The data suggested a (3 x 1) surface reconstruction of the missing-row type, with two neighbouring [001] Cu surface rows and a [001] Cu row in the second layer missing.
