Surface atomic reconstruction of Pt and Ir surfaces, induced by pulsed-laser heating, could be directly observed in the field ion microscope. The Ir (110) planes prepared by low temperature field evaporation could reconstruct to the (1 x 2) structure with missing rows of atoms. The Ir (001) plane could also be reconstructed, but the structure was very complicated.
