The inhibition of the oxygen-induced (2 x 1) reconstruction of the Ni{110} surface by sulfur impurities was investigated by time-of-flight scattering and recoiling spectrometry. The data indicated that sulfur inhibited the diffusion of Ni atoms in the added-row reconstruction, presenting a kinetic barrier to the thermodynamically stable Ni{110}-(2 x 1)-O phase.
