New low-energy electron diffraction data for the H/W(110) surface were reported, showing that W(110) underwent a reconstruction induced by adsorption of hydrogen above a critical coverage. The structural change consisted of a lateral shift of the top layer of W atoms relative to the bulk. A driving mechanism for the transition was also proposed which could also be important in other chemisorption systems. The surfaces most likely to undergo this type of reconstruction were those with adsorption sites consisting of flat potential wells.
