It was noted that electron scattering off the deformation potential of a parallel dislocation system could cause a photo-galvanic effect. That is, a direct current could be created in homogeneous crystals which were illuminated with homogeneous light. The current was oriented normal to the slip plane, and could be excited only by linearly polarized light whose polarization vector had a component that was normal to the dislocation axis.
