The zincblende (110) surfaces of eleven covalent and ionic compounds, and the wurtzite (10•0) surfaces of two relatively ionic compounds, were studied. The results showed that relaxation/reconstruction of these surfaces was governed by a competition between covalent forces and ionic forces. A dependence of the surface relaxation upon ionicity was predicted.
