The then-current state of the understanding of some semiconductor surface reconstructions was reviewed. These included the GaAs(110) surface and the (100) and (111) surfaces of Si and Ge. The strong correlation between atomic and electronic structures, and the energies involved in structural rearrangement at the surface, were considered.
