In an X-ray diffraction study of the c(2 x 8) reconstructed Ge(111) surface, intensity profiles were measured along integer-order rods of Bragg scattering perpendicular to the surface plane. The diffracted intensity profiles were explained in terms of a simple adatom model for the reconstruction. The adatoms were found to occupy T4 sites on a distorted bulk-like substrate. Any model for the c(2 x 8) reconstruction, which was based upon stacking faults in the substrate, was ruled out. For the adatom model, best-fit values were given for the positions of the atoms at the surface.
