A variety of reconstruction models was studied for the Si(110)-(16 x 2) surface using first-principles calculations. Assuming appropriate re-bonding of edge atoms and surface chains buckled in antiphase, it was shown that steps along the [¯112] direction yielding a trench indeed lower the surface energy. The long-range surface reconstruction was explained and a geometrical model was developed which was based upon steps, adatoms, tetramers and interstitials. The model was able to explain the stripes of paired pentagons seen n empty-state scanning tunnelling microscopic images.
