Using a combination of high-resolution low-energy electron diffraction and a bending sample technique, a simultaneous study was made of surface stress and surface structure during the adsorption and desorption of antimony on the Si(111) surface. During desorption, several surface reconstructions evolved, with significantly different effects upon the stress signal. The surface stress of all observed structures was obtained.
