The competition, between dislocation emission along a pair of symmetrical slip planes, and quasi-cleavage at a mode-I crack tip was investigated. The equilibrium positions, and total numbers, of emitted dislocations were determined on the basis of Peierls framework. Possible physical events at the crack tip were reviewed. Crack-blunting effects upon the stress fields near to the top of the blunted crack were analyzed.
