Scanning-tunnelling-microscopy observations of the halogenated Si(111) surfaces revealed the stacking-fault triangles as well as the (7 x 7) structures without adatoms. By performing the Monte Carlo simulations, these structures were shown to result from the structural transformation from the (1 x 1) structures to the dimer-stacking-fault structures and not its reverse as claimed by Fouchier and Boland (1998).
