The redistribution of 4 x 1014 to 6 x 1014/cm2 atoms on the clean (111) surface, during the reversible (7 x 7) → (1 x 1) transition, was revealed by a shift of monatomic steps and a change in size of 2-dimensional sublimation and growth of islands. The results were considered in conjunction with ellipsometric data which indicated the presence of about 0.2 monolayer of adatoms on the Si(111)−(1 x 1) surface.
