A theoretical model was proposed, for the elastic stress relaxation of a buried strained cylindrical inhomogeneity, which assumed edge misfit dislocation dipole formation within the soft matrix at some distance from the interface. The critical radius of the inhomogeneity for the formation of the edge misfit dislocation dipole was given and the effect of various parameters upon the critical radius was evaluated. The results indicated that the critical radius decreased with increasing misfit strain and core radius of the misfit dislocation. It was also found that, compared to edge misfit dislocation dipole formation in the interface, the critical radius of the inhomogeneity decreased when the location of edge misfit dislocation dipole formation was in the soft matrix, at some distance from the interface.
