It was noted that, during the plastic deformation of face-centered cubic materials, the dislocation density did not evolve uniformly, but a dislocation cell/wall structure was formed. X-ray diffraction reciprocal space-mapping was used to investigate this sub-structure within a single grain in a large-grained aluminium polycrystal. A simple dislocation cell/wall model, capable of computing numerical reciprocal space-maps, was presented. The model captured qualitatively the experimentally observed features.
