The Bauschinger effect in dispersion-strengthened materials was investigated using 3-dimensional dislocation-dynamics simulations. Among the various elementary features controlling strengthening, Orowan loops around impenetrable particles appeared to be a key parameter in non-relaxed microstructures, as they effectively masked a fraction of the precipitates during dislocation backwards glide. A new model was proposed, based upon the short-range interactions observed during simulations, and was compared with the classical model of Brown & Stobbs.
