A simple estimate was given of the stress that had to be applied in order to detach bowed-out edge dislocation segments from bundles. A highly simplified situation was considered in which the bowed-out segments interacted with only one closely neighbouring edge dislocation of the same, or opposite, sign. In making calculations, only the elastic interaction between the two dislocations and the restoring force acting on the bowed-out dislocation segment, due to the line tension, were considered. The calculations were performed for various combinations of dislocation segment lengths and spacings of the glide planes on which the two dislocations lay. The results obtained for the detachment stresses were compared.
