Nanocrystalline 10mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia electrolyte was synthesized
using the plasma spray technique. The ionic conductivity was measured using AC
impedance spectroscopy at 350 to 600C in air. The measured total ionic
conductivity of plasma-sprayed electrolyte was some 2.3 times higher than that of
sintered electrolyte at 600C in air. The improvement in ionic conductivity was
ascribed to the nanocrystalline grain size and siliceous free grain boundary with
grain-to-grain contact.
