The modelling of dislocation dynamics and interactions in body-centered cubic and face-centered cubic crystals was examined with particular regard to simplified local rules that had to be implemented in mesoscale simulations. The rules for the formation and destruction of dislocation junctions, and the relevant laws for dislocation mobility, were considered in some detail. Some of the known connections between the atomistic and mesoscopic scales on the one hand, and between mesoscopic dislocation properties and yield or flow stresses on the other hand, were reviewed.
