The microstructural characteristics of twin boundaries and sub-boundary networks in bulk crystals were studied using transmission electron microscopy. Three types of twin boundary were identified. These were: single straight twin boundaries, tilt twin boundaries and twin boundaries with steps. Boundary dislocations at tilt twin boundaries, and high dislocation densities around steps, were observed. The existence of the boundary dislocations was attributed to the lattice misfit between two tilt grains. The formation of twin boundaries with steps was suggested to be due to interaction between the twin boundary and dislocations. Honeycomb-like sub-boundary defects were also observed.
