A kinetic model was proposed for slip band formation, and was used to analyze the nucleation and propagation of slip bands from the point of view of non-linear dislocation ensemble dynamics. The slip band was treated as a wave of reversal of the total dislocation density and dislocation charge. A self-similar regime of slip-band evolution was predicted, and its formation was found to be highly anisotropic in that it occurred mainly in the direction of dislocation slip.
