A model was proposed for the frictional destruction of the surface layer of a solid. The main feature of the model was an ensemble of interacting dislocations and micro-cracks, whose kinetics were described by a system of coupled non-linear differential equations. Periodic changes in the wear parameters of touching materials were thereby explained.
