It was recalled that computer simulations of dislocation patterning had already provided results which were in accord with empirical laws, and that analytical models for dislocation dynamics had provided qualitative insights into dislocation patterning. The aim here was to develop a model, based upon partial differential equations, which described the dynamic evolution of dislocation patterns as a function of measurable variables. A re-formulation of a previously proposed model showed that the onset of dislocation instability was related to the applied stress.
