Collisions between 2 breathers, and between a breather and a kink, were studied using a one-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model which had a small degree of discreteness. The range of quasi-particle parameters was found for which the collision was accompanied by the conversion of energy from kinetic to potential, or vice versa. Under certain circumstances, the energy conversion could lead to the break-up of breathers into kink-antikink pairs. Within the framework of the present model, these represented dislocation loops or pairs of jogs or kinks in dislocations. The fusion of kink-antikink pairs into breathers could be observed under time-reversed conditions. A condition for the inelastic interaction of quasi-particles was found.
